290708 I will continue to remind members of the rankings of harms of drugs, licit and illicit, that were published two years ago by medical researchers in the UK. Just to remind members, from one to 20, from the most to the least harmful, the order was: heroin, cocaine, barbiturates, street methadone, alcohol (No. 5), ketamine, benzodiazepines, amphetamines, tobacco, buprenorphine, cannabis, solvents, 4-MTA, LSD, Ritalin, anabolic steroids, GHB, ecstasy, alkyl nitrates and khat.

Eyre Peninsula Natural Resources Management

29 / 07 /08 NATURAL RESOURCES COMMITTEE:
EYRE PENINSULA NATURAL RESOURCES MANAGEMENT BOARD
That the 16th report of the committee, on the Eyre Peninsula Natural Resources Management Board, be noted.

As a member of the Natural Resources Committee I will begin by summarising this report with just three points: (a) we think that Brian Foster, the Chair of the Eyre Peninsula Natural Resources Management Board, is a good bloke;

Medical Board of South Australia

29 07 08 STATUTORY AUTHORITIES REVIEW COMMITTEE: MEDICAL BOARD OF SOUTH AUSTRALIA

The board's main function is to protect the public through registration and to make the register publicly available. Despite an extensive inquiry by the Statutory Authorities Review Committee and amendments to the act, the Medical Board of South Australia is still secretive and not even performing the basic function of the act, that is, making the register publicly available. This is a body that acts without accountability, and I say, 'Bring on the amendments, Mr Hill.'

Appropriation Bill

24-07-08
I want to take the opportunity to speak about Aboriginal issues in this state in response to this particular bill. I am concerned about developments related to Aboriginal people. It is a number of years since the Rann government took apart the freestanding Aboriginal affairs portfolio and amalgamated some of its functions into the Premier's department, and I think there have probably been some consequences to that. On Sunday, I attended the launch of the latest reprint of the book 'Survival in our own land', which is a book about the Aboriginal history of South Australia.

23-07-08 A Liberal motion for the Environment Resources and Development Committee to examine desalination

The Hon. SANDRA KANCK Desalination is a technological fix—and, by fix, I do not mean a solution. If South Australia is to address its water problems, the first thing we must do is stop growing our population.

Marble Hill Protection Bill

23-07-08 This bill makes the best of a bad situation, so I will support it. The sensitive restoration of Marble Hill should mean that one of our finest buildings will be preserved for future generations to enjoy, but they will have to enjoy it from a distance because our history has been privatised. With a little imagination it could have been different.

23-07-08 In short, it will force councils trying to avoid scrutiny to be more open and will cost almost nothing to implement. It is a sensible move ensuring local government accountability and promoting community involvement.

23-07-08 This bill proposes that fines be waived for the personal cultivation and use of marijuana for people suffering designated medical conditions.
....like the vote for women, it is an idea whose time has come and, eventually, such legislation will pass.

23-07-08 It is important that we look beyond marine life as being just for the taking; as merely a resource for us to exploit. Ecosystems are exactly that; they are systems. That means that there are component parts and they are all interdependent. So, having regulations that control the rate of exploitation of pipis, or cockles, as they are also known, is important. We need regulations that ensure sustainability.

23-07-08 As a former Broken Hill girl, I am one of the many thousands of Broken Hill people who at Christmas time would be involved in the exodus of 600 kilometres—I remember from my primary school geography it was 320 miles—to Taperoo to what was called the zinc mine holiday camp. Port Adelaide became part of my world at a young age because of that.

23-07-08 RIGHT OF ASSEMBLY BILL On 17 June, 2008, 8,000 teachers had their protest march re-routed down North Terrace instead of taking the time-honoured route of protest down King William Street. On that day I announced I would be asking the Minister for Police about restrictions on marching down King William Street and said that if I did not get a satisfactory answer I would introduce a bill to protect our rights of assembly. I did not receive a satisfactory answer, so here is the bill.

The Government is executing a diabolical plan to wrest control of developments across the state.

Training and Skills Development Bill

Thursday 3rd July 2008
Early this century the school leaving age was raised from 15 years and the Democrats opposed it, and one of the chief reasons was our concern for the impact on both students and teachers of forcing those who were not academically inclined to stay at school without appropriate subjects and supports.
