NSW STRENGTHENS SA’s ANTI-NUCLEAR DUMP POSITION

A New South Wales parliamentary inquiry’s finding that the Federal Government’s proposal to establish two radioactive waste storage facilities in South Australia and New South Wales “cannot be justified and should be abandoned” is a welcome boost to South Australia’s anti-nuclear dump campaign, say the SA Democrats.

“The NSW parliamentary committee’s findings are further evidence that the Federal Government has been driven by politics not science in it plans to foist a national nuclear waste dump on South Australia,” says Sandra Kanck, Leader of the Australian Democrats.

“It is heartening that many of the points I have been making since the proposal for a national nuclear waste dump was first floated have now been endorsed by the committee.

“In particular the Committee has recognized and highlighted inadequacies in the Federal Government’s plans to transport and store radioactive waste in Australia.

“From day one I have been pointing out that transporting nuclear waste is highly questionable and that keeping nuclear waste as close as practicable to its source is the best option.

“Further the Committee recommended that the operating licence for the new reactor at Lucas Heights be deferred until the Federal Government conducts an inquiry into alternative sources of medical and industrial isotopes, security issues relating to the reactor site and emergency management issues surrounding the new reactor.

“The fact is that the decision to build a new nuclear reactor at Lucas Heights lies at the heart of  the issue and there is no need for a new reactor.”
